Yeah, fuck all else I could do. There was no where else to land as once you left the take off it was all trees.

Saying that, it's a great hobby and the only real dangers are caused by your own stupidity. Had some amazing flights where I didn't nearly end up kebabed on a pine tree

Re: Planet Earth 2
I nearly killed myself in the Alps a few years back. Was hungover after a late session in Les Arcs and didn't check the wing properly before take off. One of the lines to the wing tip was caught under a rock and wrapped around the wing tip so when I took off it was bunched up and buggered up the Aero of the wing. It was pulling right and my rate of descent was much quicker than it should have been. There was a tree lined ridge between me and the nearest landing area and as I was descending quicker than I should I had a very good chance of flying into very ponty tree branches at 30 mph. I also had very little control on the direction as I was having to use full left brake and using my body just to keep flying straight .

I cleared the top of the trees by ten feet and manged a none too pretty landing in the end. Taught me a very valuable lesson.

Cheers for that.

Although I did laugh when you mentioned lifting your legs and letting the airbag take the hit because, in theory that would help, but a lot of them clips showed them landing on rocks!! And I guess its not much help then!! (haha)

When you stall is that when you go into a spin? Ever happened to you?

I never realised sloths were such good swimmers. I felt sorry for him when he arrived for what he though was a guaranteed bunk up only to find the female already sprogged up :.)

Re: Planet Earth 2
If you are coming in too fast, its always a good idea to raise your legs are the last moment and let the airbag (basically a fabric pouch under your harness that fills with air that deflates when you hit the ground and cushions the landing) take the hit and hopefully you slide your arse along the ground rather than hit it full on.

In terms of flying, they are much smaller than a normal paraglider wing, which means that you go faster (less drag from the lines and wing) but that comes at the expense of lift and your ability to decrease your speed. A lot of it is done on snow, as you can wear skis which means you can land at a faster speed and just slow yourself with the skis.

Control wise, they need very careful inputs as you can easily flip yourself or deflate the wing and collapse it. That's why those guys were constantly checking the wing to make sure they werent going to fold. The only thing that keeps the wing solid is the air passing through it and if you stall it, very bad things can happen.

Jesus bloody Christ!! I must've said "That's gonna hurt...." about ten times watching that!!

Is there a technique to it or is it just 'cross your fingers and hope for the best'?

Truly magic TV, am loving every single minute.
Pole dancing Bears, Faceplanting Bobcats and Snow Leopards kicking off. I agree it should be shown in schools, its the best thing you can do if you want the kids to save what is left of our planet.

Oh, and I paraglide and have tried speed flying(albeit on a far gentler descent) and I can safely say that those guys are fucking mental. They are as twitchy as fuck and it doesn't take a big mistake to get you into a hell of a lot of trouble as below clips demonstrate.

Watched BOTH last night, them SNAKES...FMOB - hunting in packs.

I think this sort of program should be shown in schools, superb viewing and better than wasting an hour on R.E etc. So informative and would engage kids so much more.

Absolutely amazing TV and as has been said worth the TV Licence alone! I've said to the mrs a number of times "what are we gonna do when Sir Dave is no more!" He has one of those calm, reassuring and relaxing voices to listen too that alongside the amazing footage make this programme an absolute pleasure to watch! I look forward to these Attenborough series weeks before they come out and I was never really much of a nature fan. Some of the stuff you learn about different animals is amazing and often really surprising.
